Rappahannock High School is in desperate need of additional substitute teachers. The School Board learned at last Tuesday’s meeting that teachers are reporting for work despite illness because there are just no substitutes available.
The problem was brought to the School Board’s attention when high school teacher Roger Flinchum asked if the policy handbook’s section on payment to substitutes could be changed. He noted that it was difficult to find someone to take a class at the high school from a substitute list that fluctuated from three to five persons.
Flinchum said he'd heard complaints about the pay system here. A substitute who works at the beginning of one month has to wait until after the School Board meeting the following month to get a check. Under this method, it’s often 45 days or more before a substitute receives payment, according to ftfrichum.
"That’s just one of those unfortunate things,” responded Superintendent William Bloomer, adding that there was no feasible way the policy could be changed. Accounts aren’t computed until the end of the month and the School Board must then approve payment, usually at its regular meeting on the second Tuesday. In addition. Bloomer noted that payment must be made by check, eliminating the possibility of recompense from a petty cash fund.
