pensation Board allows one deputy per 2,000 population. According to Buntin, county population stands at approximately 5,500, qualifying Rappahnnock for two and three-fourth’s positions. With Ray Jackson working parttime, “We’re one-half deputy short of what is allowed by statute,” said Buntin. "The statue goes on to say that additional deputies will be allowed if the Supervisors can justify the request...If the Supervisors strongly supported this and wrote a letter to the Compensation Board (stating their support), we stand a chance of getting it,” he contended.
If the Compensation Board funded two-thirds of the deputy’s salary, total cost would amount to more than 53,000 once mileage was counted, Buntin acknowledged. However, he added that his department had returned 54,500 surplus from what had been allocated by the Supervisors last year. He asked that the Board at least reinstate the additional deputy’s position in the budget to see how the Compensation Board woulH respond.
