about qualified substitutes, the high school teachers worried about substitutes, period. Flinchum reported that he knew of at least two occasions during the current year when tiigh school principal Dennis Wingfield called every name on that school’s substitute list “with no takers.”

“How much are they paid,” asked Sharon Kilpatrick.

Bloomer answered that the scale ranged from $19.50 to $21.50 per day.

“That’s only $3 an hour,” countered Mrs. Kilpatrick. "It’s not suprising that you don’t have more interested.”

Bomberger proposed that the substitute teacher pay scale be revised so that the higher pay would lure substitutes from adjoining counties.

Mrs. Massie indicated that the School Board would review the substitute teacher salary scale during next year’s Ibudget process. “We appreciate your comments and we’ll see if we can’t add to the list (of substitutes) before fall,” she concluded.

(Anyone interested in becoming an approved substitute for either the high school or the elementary school may obtain forms from the School Board offices in Sperryville. The pay for substitutes ranges from $19.50 to $21.50, depending on experience. Pay categories are (1) high school diploma only (with no teaching certificate and no teaching experience), (2) three year’s experience with no certificate, (3) teaching certificate with no experience and (4) certificate with three year’s experience.)
