But discipline is never unduly harsh nor is it required often. The love that the Jacksons lavish on their charges seems to be returned and the girls try to please their foster parents. Roberta and Charles have a talent for bringing out the best in any child.
“When they go out, there’s lovin’ and kissin’—they make a whole lot of us,” said Mrs. Jackson.
It’s a natural response as Roberta is the epitome of motherhood. When she talks, her voice comes out in a croon that makes conversation into a lullaby. Large and warm, she seems to enfold all she surveys into her ample arms.
Charles Jackson, too, seems to be a gentle man—the kind who might take frustrations out on a stack of kindling wood or a garden plot but never on a child.
