In the past, the Board members have talked about enacting a litter ordinance with stiffer, minimum fines for littering. But talk is as far as it’s gone.
Why can’t they adopt regulations that would levy penalties of $50 or $100 for dumping trash on the ground at the dumpster sites? After denying the Sheriff an additional deputy for three years in a row, the Supervisors can’t very well ask him to .put a man on dumpster detail to enforce any new ordinance but they could hire someone part-time at minimum wage and deputize him (or her) to write litter tickets. It wouldn’t take long. After a few folks were slapped with significant fines plus facing the embarrassment of seeing their name and “crime” printed in the Rappahannock News with the rest of the court cases, there’d be less mess. And the Supervisors could use the money they saved from trash pick-up to honor their commitments to pay the Board of Zoning Appeals legal bills.
