It was built in 1735 when this area of the country was a vast mountain wilderness, and the home of the Mannahoack Indian Nation, whose trails were the only roads.
An English interpretation of this Indian name would be "they were very merry”; however, they were said, by historians, to have been cohtinuously at war with the Massawomec Nation to the west of the Shenandoah Valley.
“Rosewood” was built by what must have been a courageous family named Thomson, who erected what is now the three-story west wing of the house. In 1776, a family named Bragg purchased the property and added the east wing of the structure. They resided there until 1951 when it was purchased by Mr. and Mrs. Charles H. Estes, who made extensive restoration and added the tall white columns on the front porch, enhancing the 18th Century charm of the dignified, old home.
