pahannock Ski Area’s snow skiing privileges during considerations of the Ski Area’s special use permit application, recalled Luke, nobody besides a few individuals and an editorial in the Rappahannock News protested that "property rights were being taken away.”
Supervisor Dick Latham interjected that RLEP had made "right much of a switch around” after being neutral on the issue of the Ski Area's proposals for an Alpine slide and other support activities at the Harris Hollow site.

Luke noted that RLEP President Phil Irwin had first appeared before the Planning Commission on behalf of his organization in support of the Ski Area's plans and then came back a few days later opposed to those same plans. “As far as I’m concerned,” said the Supervisor Chairman, “their credibility went right down the tube.”
(In December 1977, RLEP’s Board of Directors passed a resolution approving the concept of a year-round recreational facility with a snowless Alpine slide in Harris Hollow. On January 16, the Board passed a second resolution rescinding its original approval and adopting instead a neutral position.)
Supervisor Clarence Baldwin interjected that the Planning Commission had been allowed “plenty of time" to discuss any questions pertaining to the Ski Area since corporation president James Moore first applied for a special use permit last December.
Speaking from the audience. RLEP member Werner Krebser emphasized that the environmental organization was not opposing the Ski Area but was instead "attacking the amendment that opens the county as a whole."
Noting that the letter from Olson made no mention of either the Ski Area or the Alpine slide, Krebser maintained that it was unfair of the Supervisors to view RLEP’s concerns as an attack on the Ski Area “when we're really opposed, not to the Ski Area, but to opening up the county."
