Mullikin said he averages approximately five miles per day for the eight to ten hours that he spends crawling. So far, his 1,600 mile trip has taken almost 18 months with time out for the winter. As part of his routine, he drives a pickup truck loaded with supplies to his destination for the day and then turns around to hitch-hike back to the point where he begins his crawl. Most of the time, said Mullikin, he spends the night with people he meets along the way, although he occasionally sleeps in a motel. In Rappahannock, he stayed the weekend with the Thomas Taylor family of Sperryville.
As passers by stop to stare and talk, Mullikin hands out flyers that ask folks to devote at least one hour daily to “fervent prayer” with the aim of ‘‘lifting up” President Carter, Congress and the nation as a whole so the United States “will truly be a nation under God.”
Chitterling Dinner
A chicken, chitterling and pig feet dinner to benefit the Promised Land Baptist Church birthday rally will be held at the home of Catherine Carter and Walter Freeman Saturday, Oct. 14, beginning at 4 p.m.
