These same 19 dedicated people, in my view, need the full support of every household in the District. They not only provide professional service in fire and rescue work, but also hear the brunt of providing the funds. This volunteer group take the added responsibility of funding the whole operation. The only outside help is $500 from the Town of Washington and $240 from the county for emergency phone service. A few- regular donors contribute a small amount. 1 think all this should tell us something. If we have an accident or serious illness, our ambulance can respond within minutes with at least one first aid volunteer and one emergency medical technician. If w-e have a tire the department can be there in a few minutes with protective equipment. We can ask how much is a life worth? How much does a tire destroy?
Do you know that our insurance rates are lower when we have adequate fire protection?
1 ask myself how valuable is the tire and rescue service is to Washington and vicinity, and how valuable to me as a property holder? Shouldn't all of us take a hard look at the values, and make up our minds if we are fair to these 19 wonderful, dedicated people who take our problems in emergency very seriously. How can we take the fund raising burden off them, and free them for better service.
Let not the next siren call be for you. Respond to the budget needs as soon as you can as best you can. I expect to do my part.

The Chester Gap Volunteer Fire Department announces a fund drive to raise money for a muchneeded new Fire Hall roof. After many years of usage and deterioration, the present old flat roof was damaged by the ice storm last spring.
