At this time last year, we were congratulating the Rappahannock Supervisors for their decision to install fire extinguishers at the courthouse just in time for National Fire Prevention week. We appear to have jumped the gun.
This year, in time for the two weeks from October 9 to 24 set aside for attention to fire safety, the Supervisors have received a letter from the state Fire Marshal. The Marshal gave the Board 30 days to come up with a plan for a second upstairs exit from the courthouse. Lack of an escape way besides the steps that nm over the furnace room constitutes a violation ot state fire regulations—a fact the Supervisors have been aware of since last November when they were notified by the Fire Marshal.
