The aim of the project, said Elmore, is to evaluate the effectiveness of floride added to school drinking water for students in grades kindergarten through twelfth as compared to the effectiveness of floride-treated water for grades kindergarten through sixth and kindergarten through eighth. According to Elmore, the school system's only responsibility will be to take water samples twice a week for checks on floride levels—one sample to be checked at the school and the second sent to Richmond.
Dr. Joseph Doherty, also from the National Institute of Health, told the Board members that similar programs have been operating in other localities—125 in North Carolina and 150 in Kentucky—with virtually no parental objections. "It's not a new system at all." he said, noting that floride has been added to drinking water supplies since 1946.
