care that needs to be taken in conjunction with the program is to advise parents to discontinue giving supplemental floride to their children during the school year. However, Doherty noted, topical applications of floride directly to the teeth by dentists could continue.

“This project is one way of reducing tooth decay by 40 per cent through only drinking water,” said Doherty. He added that the grant would also pay for any added project instituted to encourage children to drink water at school once the floridation equipment is installed.

After the project is under way, he continued, dental examiners will check the children’s teeth every three years. He noted that the floride added to school water would not protect baby teeth and wasn't as effective in combating tooth decay as floride added to the community water supply. However, he did note that floride tooth paste could only be expected to reduce cavities by 10 to 20 per cent while the pilot project for the county’s public schools would reduce the incidence of decay in Rappahannock school children by 40 per cent.
