Mullikin wears shorts and a white tee-shirt with the number one and the letters S.O.N. across the front. S.O.N. stands for “Save Our Nation,” the theme of his crawl campaign. According to Mullikin, the number also signifies that “There’s only one way and that’s God's way."
It seems reasonable to expect Hans Mullikin’s knees to be covered with thick, horny calluses. Instead, they’re just a little pink, no worse for the wear than a housewife’s dishpan hands. Mullikin has protected his knees over the long crawl with a layer of sheepskin and about six inches of leatherbacked padding.
The padding apparatus and the cart that he tows along the highway are his own original design. After all, it’s hard to walk into a store and expect to find equipment on the shelves for crawling across the country!
The shafts of the cart are attached to a rod with wheels at both ends. Mullikin slips between the shafts and, on his padded knees with his hands on the bar, pushes the cart along. It has a little American flag flying at the rear and is decorated with signatures of well wishers
