Transportation « iatety, the Bureau of EMS has purchased sets of MAST trousers (MAST is an acronym for “medical anti-shock trousers”) valued at $350 each.

The Amissville Fire Company and Rescue Squad, the Flint Hill and Washington Fire companies and Sperryville Rescue Squad have all been awarded a MAST suit, contingent on these organizations meeting the necessary requirements.

A MAST suit is a pair of inflatable pants that fits a patient from the ankle to the lower rib cage and is designed to stabilize blood pressure. Once the pants are inflated, they move blood from the lower extremities to the lungs, heart, kidneys and brain to keep the patient from going into shock.

In order to receive one of the MAST suits, Icoal rescue squads are required to provide the following assurances to the Bureau of EMS: that the local medical community (usually the Medical Society) approves the use of the trousers, that the rescue squad receiving the trousers trains its eligible members in the use of the
