express his creativity in photography. This desire for discovery led to his exploration of fine arts photography, and to the formation of his own ideas towards photography.
Kilby defines his fine arts photography as the “visual interpretation of a conceptual idea.” He further explains this as visually capturing in a photograph what was previously only captured in the mind.
In his photograph, “World Lines,” for example, Kilby has shot railway lines which intersect at a junction, but then go on in different directions.
Taken purely as it immediately appears, the photograph seems rather dull and strange. But when it is interpreted as a piece of fine art, it takes on a different meaning. It is a picture of two people who lead totally separate lives, but who, for a brief instant, meet each other, and then go on the way they were going, probably never to run across each other again.
This idea cannot be presented factually; it is impossible to try and picture such a concept unless it is done in the abstract, which is what Kilby is trying to do.
To a few people, this interpretation of photography seems nonsensical and very far removed from the world of family snapshots taken
