younger children, emphasis is placed on structured play that aids large motor development, according to Harris.
Inside activities include art classes, crafts and cooking. The children have fashioned pottery beads that will be kiln fired and strung on necklaces. They’ve made peanut butter balls and juice popsicles and baked gingerbread men to take with them to the Library’s story hour.
"We use as many county facilities as we can,” said Hay, noting that the youngsters attend story hour and the film series at Trinity Church parish hall sponsored by the VPI Extension office. The children are also taken to the Recreation Center for nature walks and play on the outdoor equipment there. “We always clean up when we go,” Hay added.
A big part of the summer program for older children is gardening. The kids work in the vegetable plot from 9 to 9:30 every morning and will later sell the fruits of their labors. Then they will use the money they’ve raised for extra summer activities.
‘‘We still do readiness skills in math and reading for pre-schoolers but there’s less emphasis on academics than in the regular school program,” said Harris. And with all the fun they’re having, the little ones probably have no idea they’re doing anything as serious as learning.
