Coal Use-Acid Rain

The increased use of coal seen as a solution to the country’s energy needs will significantly increase the problem of acid rain, Northup said. He was cirtical of recent remarks made by Virginia Governor John Dalton. The Governor maintained that too much emphasis has been placed on energy conservation when the nation should instead be increasing its use of coal and nuclear power.

Northup also noted the resistance of industry to emission controls,. As a private individual, he said he would be willing to pay the added cost of products if the increase arose from steps taken to protect the environment.

“Hordes of lobbyists are descending on Washington, attempting to have controls (instituted by the Federal Clean Air Act) relaxed,” Northup said. He called for public support on the side of federal environmental controls to combat the intensive lobbying efforts by industry.
