Rappahannock s Gary Leake shattered school scoring records ■ Tuesday night in a spectacular performance as the varsity Panthers clawed their way to victory over Elkton, 78-62.
With his record setting 34 points, Leake set the pace for a scoring effort in the December 18 home contest that saw two other RCHS players hit double figures.
The game was close all during the first quarter. Both the Elks and the Panthers made runs on the big lead only to be stopped by the other's fast baskets.
In the second quarter, Elkton pulled ahead by six but Rappahannock came back in the closing minutes of the half. The Panthers stole careless Elk passes and turned the turn-overs into scores. Jimmy Tomko substituting for ailing starter Dean Wilson, connected with a half-court heave at the buzzer, repeating Tony Wayland’s last second shot against Luray last week, and sent Rappahannock to the locker rooms with a four point edge.
