George Beard, Rappahannock’s representative in the Virginia House of Delegates, gave a brief rundown on the upcoming General Assembly session at the December 7 meeting of the Rappahannock League for Environmental Protection.
Introduced by RLEP president Phil Irwin as a man "who might turn out to be one of the greatest legislators of all time,” Beard jokingly warned the audience “you better wipe your feet off when you leave here.” His remark opened the informal presentation with a round of chuckles.
Facing a group concerned with environmental issues, Beard began by reviewing waste disposal control measures implemented recently by local Firms, Rochester, Double Day and Rental Uniform in Culpeper. Stricter controls were implemented, said Beard, in response to citizen concern over waste disposal from manufacturing processes.
Beard noted that a new speaker will replace retiring House of Delegates leader John Warren Cook and added that he'd been approached about serving on another committee. (Beard currently serves on the Finance and Agriculture Committees and several subcommittees.)
He also expressed hope that the new speaker will change the make-up of the education committee, described by Beard as “one of the most liberal.” According to Beard, most of the current education committee members are teachers who have “no understanding of economic issues.
