Let your children know that school vandalism makes your taxes go up. Don’t be too quick to assure your child that someone’s feelings weren’t hurt by a thoughtless act. If your child breaks something through carelessness, let him or her earn money to replace it. If your child leaves a cheap toy out in the rain, consider letting it rust.
Children need to learn life has its problems as well as its successes, that their behavior affects others, that every action has its consequences (not all of them good).
