The national political campaign ends Nov. 3. According to the press, there are many voters in the “undecided” category. Perhaps the following will help some reach a decision. The two principal candidates for the Residency appeal from differing positions: One has been in office nearly four years and has a record to defend - and, if he wins, to extend. The other promises to perform differently - and better. President Carter has said very little to date in the campaign about his record. It is not hard to see why: 1. Speaking of crimes and justice in 1976, Mr. Carter said that “ . . . restoring order in our society ... is a question of leadership.” Since he took office, violent crime has increased 20 percent. 2. It may be that your readers are unaware that the paid political advertisement by the local Democratic Party in your October 16 issue is not in accordance with current election laws. Section 431 of the Federal election laws, recently revised by the Democratic-controlled Congress, prohibits political funds to be used in support of a candidate unless those funds are solicited and collected by that candidate’s campaign organization. Hence the name of the Democratic national nominee should not have been mentioned in the advertisement.
We of the Republican Party in Rappahannock County are being scrupulous in our attention to those regulations. We are also presenting to your readers in the limited space available in political advertisements information on the Republican Party national platform and our own beliefs with regard to local issues which we believe are of concern to the citizens of our county.
We also look forward with some anticipation to seeing an editorial from your “Republican Special Writer” to provide us with a counterpoint to the views of your “Democrat Special Writer” which were presented on your editorial page of the October 9th issue.
