Of Virginia’s 3.4 million licensed drivers, over onethird or 1.4 million drivers have now accumulated a maximum of five safe-driving points, according to Vem L. Hill, commissioner of the Division of Motor Vehicles.
“Since the Driver Improvement ' Program became effective January 1, 1975, good drivers have earned one good point for each calendar year that demerit points have not been assigned to their records,” Hill said.
“That means if you have avoided license suspension, revocation or conviction of a moving violation during the last five years, you now have five good points on your record,” he explained.
Hill noted that drivers can use a maximum of five safedriving points to erase current or future demerit points.
Last year, almost threefourths of Virginia’s drivers or 2.6 million earned onesafe-driving point.
Drivers can also earn five safe-driving points by completing a Driver Improvement Clinic approved by DMV. At the clinics, drivers are instructed in methods of defensive driving. Although the clinics are open to all drivers. Hill said they are primarily for drivers who have a high number of demerit points.
