properly for the job. Wear warm, comfortable, trimfitting clothing that allows easy movement. Steel-toed boots or shoes with nonskid soles are a must. A recent survey showed that one in six chain saw accidents could be traced to a loss of footing.
Other pieces of proper equipment includes safety goggles or eye glasses with safety lenses to help prevent possible eye injury from flying wood chips or sticks. A good safety hardhat may prevent serious head injury from falling branches, limbs, or bumping your head.
“Ear protection (ear plugs or acoustic muffs) are essential because of the saw’s high noise level," Hetzel said. If ears ring for an extended time after the saw is used, hearing damage may have occurred.
In addition to possibly causing hearing loss, the noise and vibration of a chain saw can cause fatigue and swelling of the hands, which is commonly known as "white fingers” disease. Buy a saw with minimum vibration and good vibrationabsorbing grips.
Proper maintenance is also essential. Take time to sharpen the chain and adjust the tension. A loose chain can fly off the bar, and a dull chain can drag and catch on the wood.
"Before felling a tree, size it up carefully,” stated Hetzel. “Note where the larger branches are and the wind direction to determine how the tree is likely to fall. Don’t allow anyone within two tree lengths of a person felling a tree.”
Also, Hetzel advised, look over the terrain and have an escape route ready in case the tree suddenly begins falling the wrong way. Sudden gusts of wind may cause a tree tc fall in an unexpected direction. Avoid cutting large trees on windy days, or use these days for limbing (removing the limbs from the trunk) or bucking (cutting the trunk into desired lengths).
