Seminar Planned
The VPI Extension Service will hold a special half-day seminar on Thursday, November 20, on how the small woodworking industry can keep costs to an absolute minimum without sacrificing quality through do-it-yourself help from the sun.
To be held at the Holiday Inn—Airport in Richmond from 10 a.m. to 3 o.m.. the seminar will be conducted by two leading authorities in the woodworking industry, Dr. Gene Wengert and Fred Lamb.
Presentations will show how the small woodworking company can buy green lumber at sometimes half the cost of dry lumber, how to build a solar-heated lumber dryer, how to dry wood to seven per cent moisture with solar heat and how to store dry lumber to avoid manufacturing defects. The seminar will also focus on construction, theory and operation of the solar-heated lumber dryer that has been designed and tested at Virginia Tech. Plans will be distributed for a 1,500 BF unit with instructions on how to increase the size up to 5,000 BF. Also, techniques for measuring moisture content will be reviewed.
