Virginia motorists planning to "winterize” their motor vehicles need to give special consideration to their tires, according to the Department of State Police.
“One of the most frequent and dangerous habits,” says a Department spokesman, “is for a motorist to replace rear radial tires, with bias-ply or bias-belted tires, leaving radial tires on the front wheels. Not only is this extremely dangerous, it is contrary to the inspection rules and regulations.”
According to State Police safety regulations, a motor vehicle may not be equipped with radial tires on the front wheels if it has bias-ply or bias-belted tires on the rear wheels. However, a vehicle may have bias-ply or biasbelted tires on both front wheels and radial tires on both rear wheels. The regulations also prohibit having a radial tire and a bias-ply or bias-belted tire on the same axle.
