As the first peas begin to bloom on the vines, local gardeners look forward to fresh-picked vegetables. But, according to the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, those without a green thumb can still enjoy the taste and economy of garden vegetables and be able to freeze and can all that their pantry will hold besides. This agency publishes a booklet called the Virginia Freah Vegetable Guide which lists the thirtyseven pick-your-own vegetable farms in Virginia. The booklet recommends that you call ahead for exact picking dates and field conditions, and tells which farms also offer fresh-picked vegetables.

In Warren County, Harmony Hollow Orchard will have sweet corn and pumpkins for sale in midsummer. The number there is (703) 636-2009. Call first, bring containers and children.

Winter squash, pumpkins, ornamental com and spring peas will be available at Manor Lane Bony Farm in Fauquier County. Early Queen and Silver Queen com are offered already picked, from July 1 to Labor Day. Call Manor Lane at (703) 347-4883.
