“My druthers are we not get the extra car,” Wood announced. With agreement from Cox that adding the car to the budget will not effect the proposed tax rate, Luke maintained that the county “should provide the wherewith-all to get the job done” and not depend on the sheriff to provide his own vehicle for county business.
Wood countered that if the sheriff wanted to, he could work out an arrangement for sharing the three cars the department already has.
“Is there any place we can find the money in the budget?” asked supervisor Dick Latham.
When Luke answered that the money was there without raising the rate any higher, Wood argued that the supervisors should be talking about cutting the proposed budget, not adding to it. “My opinion is that we could cut it down to a $5.25 rate if we were really serious about it.”
“There’s no way in the world we’re going to get away without increasing taxes,” the chairman maintained. With Clarence Baldwin already gone from the meeting, Luke suggested postponing the decision on the sheriff’s car until the special budget approval session set for 9 a.m. on June 8.
