The slippery peddler, Ali Hakim (Jim McCullough), was an audience favorite, and McCullough obviously relished his role. A minor character, Ike Skidmore (who?), was made noteworthy by Bobby Ludwick’s easygoing stage presence and his crisp dancing that stood out in the ensemble numbers.
Ingenious set designs were constructed by James Dennis and his shop classes with quick set changes carried out by the actors in view of the audience. The smokehouse was especially well done, lending an effectively somber backdrop for the villain, Jud Fry, played with understated malevolence by David Bywaters.
A small orchestra, under the direction of Judy Bomberger, provided the accompaniment and added an extra dimension and professionalism, to the production. Nothing like the sound of a French horn to round out the corners of a high school gym.
