On the application, wouldbe communiplators should indicate their top three choices for CommuniPlate combinations. Ampersands, dashes and other forms of punctuation may not be used. Then the completed application and appropriate fee should be mailed to the Reserved License Plate Section at DMV headquarters in Richmond.
CommuniPlates are unique and initially will be reserved according to the date the applications are postmarked. If two or more people request the same combination, the person whose application is processed first will receive it.
If none of the requested combinations is available, DMV will attempt to contact the applicant by telephone during business hours. When the system is automated in July, applicants will be able to check the availability of CommuniPlate combinations when they apply at DMV branch offices.
DMV does, however, reserve the right to refuse to issue any combinations that are unacceptable. Using a list -similar to one used in California, DMV has programmed its computer to reject applications for over
