The county receives something in return for preferential tax treatment through the farmer’s commitment to keeping land in agriculture for eight years with ag districts, according to Krebser. “Commitment—that’s where I think the crux is,” he concluded.
"I’m glad to see this happening—people expressing ideas,” said Bill Fletcher. "We’re all working for the same goal, just trying to reach there by different roads...We all want to maintain the character and integrity of this county as much as we can.”
Fletcher acknowledged that both land use taxation and ag districts have "inherent defects” and neither offers a complete solution to farmland preservation. "But land use taxation will allow B. Settle to survive for three or four more years until a new program comes along...It gives small farmers an opportunity for what large land owners can get with ease.”
