Nancy Reeve pointed out that large land owners, who already can qualify for land use by meeting the 500 acre minimum for an ag district, will actually derive little benefit from preferential tax treatment Their overall tax bills will not decrease significantly with land use since they will be paying a higher rate on their homes, barns, tenant houses and other improvements. On the other hand, the small farmers, who have few improvements, will get more of a tax break because they wilt be paying higher rates on their homes only, she said. “You’ll be saving the small farmers with county-wide land use taxation," Reeve said.
