Nichols had word from their son Andy, a communications officer in California, that his brother’s name did not appear on any casualty list. “Then Curtis called us Thursday and told us he was all right,” Mrs. Nichols said.
Francis L. (Buck) Payne, brother of Mrs. Sandra Brown of Sperryville, was also on board the Nimitz when the crash occurred.
LI Payne, assigned to duties tying down aircraft on the carrier, had just gone below decks when the crash occurred. Payne was also assigned to the Nimitz when it took part in the unsuccessful attempt to rescue the American hostages in Iran.
Both Payne and Nichols are graduates of Rappahannock County High School.
