Drilling began Tuesday on the new town well located on the Updike farm just outside of Washington. According to Mayor Newbill Miller, the drill struck water at about 75 feet.
“Everything looks real promising,” Miller said. "But we’re going down to two hundred feet just for insurance.” Miller said that when drilling stopped Tuesday night, the flow was about fifty gallons per minute.
The new well site is the one chosen as most likely to produce a good flow of water by the state geologist. The well, plus recent rains, greatly improves the water supply picture for the town after a year-long battle with drought, dry wells, and leaky old pipes.
