Responding to the tax proposals in land use aimed at helping farmers, Hugo Sinnott thanked the supervisors for “the tremendous job you’ve done in preserving the county.” He also requested the board to consider tax relief for the elderly, maintaining that persons receiving social security may not be able to meet their property taxes.

“We’re trying to keep taxes as low as we ean...I think we’re about the lowest county in the state of Virginia,” replied Luke. "We don’t have any extra frills. We’re right on rock bottom.” Running a tax relief for the elderly program would require a clerk for administrative and investigative purposes, he noted. “But it might be something to look into, to cost out.”
Sinnott responded that applicants should be able to furnish bank and social security statements, eliminating need for eligibility investigation.
