A Big
Yellow Bird?
Wondering if what she saw land in a tall pine tree at her farm was a very large yellow bird, Mrs. Charles A. Wood went to investigate for she had never seen such a large yellow bird.
It was, however, a large yellow balloon too high in the tree for retrieving, which had landed at “Dun-Lookin” farm at Boston. When her grandson Stephen Filyo Jr. of Gaithersburg who is in the Air Force and a friend, a policeman from Montgomery County, came visiting, they climbed the tree and brought the balloon down.
A note attached revealed this balloon was one of 600 released by the third grade students of Whitmore Lake Public School in Whitmore, Mich. This was project Young Authors Lift-Off and anyone finding a balloon was asked to return the tag and send a note saying where the balloon was found.
Mrs. Wood complied and in return received a note from the school in this farming community informing her that Gary Kurth was the student who released the balloon. There had been 20 returns and this was the one which had traveled the longest distance. They also asked that any information published concerning the balloons be sent them.
