couldn’t even walk yet. First Rick Talley, a young animal lover who rents a tenant house on the Sharps’ farm, tried playing nursemaid and feeding the little raccoons but they wouldn’t take a bottle. •
According to Sally, the babies had almost starved to death before Washington postmaster Carol Miller stepped in and showed her how to tube feed. After four or five days of these forced meals, Ricky and Raquel were strong enough to begin drinking infant formula from a nurser and from there, graduated to baby food.
Sally kept the raccoons shut up until they were big enough to fend for themselves against the Sharps’ cats. By then, the dogs had accepted the newcomers as additions to the farm menagerie and, like the cows and cats, off-limits for chasing and chewing.
Once the raccoons outweighed the felines, they moved to an outdoor cage with the door kept open. Following the example of animal experts who have reintroduced zoo bred lions and chimpanzees to life in the wild, Sally tried gradually to teach her adopted charges how to fend for themselves.
