“She’s a real dog!”
That disparaging remark is not applied generally to the bountifully endowed lovelies who grace the pages of calendars but for Sally and George Sharp’s Asta, it fits perfectly.
The big German shepherd is the February 1982 calendar girl for the German Shepherd Dog Gub of America. The photograph for the coming year’s calendar shows Asta almost touching noses with an inquisitive raccoon who’s clutching precariously on to a tree trunk. The caption reads “No, I’m not a coon dog!”
While Asta isn’t a coon hound, her owner, Sally Sharp of Mountain Green Farm near Washington, can claim title to foster raccoon mother of the year. That’s the story behind the picture.
In June, 1980, a terrible storm split1’the old tree in the Sharps’ yard, spilling infant raccoons out of their nest onto the ground. The family dogs killed two before Sally could swoop to the rescue but she managed to save the other half of the litter, two balls of striped fur that she christened Ricky Raccoon and Raquel.
