His supporters apparently began their efforts a lot earlier than did those people who wanted Mrs. Boddie named to the board, Baldwin noted. Mrs. Boddie’s nomination “was just a suggestion and nobody followed up on it,” he said.
Supervisor H. B. Wood pointed out that Updike was a college graduate. "I don't know what he majored in,” the Stonewall-Hawthorne representative said.
