"It was this pack that made the difference in many meets,” Spieker said. "These young men pushed each other and shifted positions with just a few seconds separating the runners as they crossed the finish line as a group. To be passed by eight Rappahannock runners in one sweep can be demoralizing for an opponent."
First year varsity runners John Shanahan, Bobby Ludwick and Brian Kritz rounded out the 1981 team. Gary Foster, in his post as manager, also provided important encouragement to the cross country Panthers, according to Spieker.
