Drive Closed
Portions of Skyline Drive will be closed to vehicles during the upcoming hunting season. Shenandoah National Park Superintendent Robert Jacobsen is taking this action due to the increased numbers of wildlife illegally killed along the Drive during past hunting seasons.
From November 8, 1981, through January 9, 1982, the Skyline Drive between Front Royal (Mile 0) and Thornton Gap (Mile 31), and between Swift Run Gap (Mile 65) and Rockfish Gap (Mile 105), will be closed daily between dusk and 8:00 a.m.
The section of the Drive between Thornton Gap (U.S. 211) and Swift Run Gap (U.S. 33) will remain open 34 hours per day, weather permitting.
Jacobsen said that, by closing portions of the Drive, rangers will be able to concentrate patrols on problem areas and increase hunter contacts along the Park boundary. “We ask our Park neighbors to call Park Headquarters (703-999-2227), immediately, if they observe any illegal hunting activities along the Park boundary,” he added.
