Rappahannock's welfare department distributed 570 pounds of processed American cheese on Tuesday to eligible supplemental security income (SSI) and food stamp recipients.
The five pound blocks of surplus cheese given out by volunteers and office staff on Tuesday constituted almost one-third of the 1,800 pound allocation. Distribution will continue through Friday with any cheese left over at that point to go to the public school’s lunch program.
As a supplement to the distribution, the welfare department offered the following suggestions on home care and storage of cheese.
Cheese may be stored indefinitely at a constant 32 degrees F. in the original pack. Each loaf is covered with an airtight wrap. Slice the amount of cheese needed from the loaf and then tape the ends to keep it airtight. If the original wrap is removed, rewrap the cheese tightly with plastic film wrap, leaving no air pockets. Always return remaining cheese to the original box to keep pressure on the surface. Well wrapped opened cheese may be kept at 30 degrees - 35 degrees F for 3 or 4 weeks.
