registration fees for vehicles weighing 4,000 pounds or less would be increased from $15 to $19, while owners of vehicles 4,000 pounds or more would pay $24, up from $20. Other fees would go up also.
Sen. Willey's original bill was amended last week to raise the maximum weight per truck from 76,000 to 80,000 pounds. Truck trailer lengths would be increased from 55 to 60 feet.
Along with the wholesale tax increase, the proposal to allow greater trailer lengths was criticized by the railroad industry and other groups, who said allowing greater weights and lengths would cause more wear on the state’s highways.
Virginia Taxpayers Association President Kenneth White criticized Sen. Willey’s bill, saying the state ought to cut back on highway spending instead of raising taxes.
