Rappahannock County High School’s eighth grade basketball team has posted a record breaking season, compiling seven wins against a single loss.
"We had seven quality ball players who could have started on any eighth grade team in the district,” said coach Mike Connifey. “It helped because I could substitute in and out to give the boys a rest. But it’s also the reason why our bench . didn’t get more playing time—the first seven were so very talented. Milson French, who coaches both the eighth grade and varsity teams for Strasburg High School, told me it’s surprising to have so many good players at the same time in eighth grade and he’s been around for a long time!”
The “beastie” Panthers had a balanced offense with four players alternating as high scorer. “That tells you something about the well roundedness of the team,” Connifey noted.
Top scorer, and leading rebounded for the season was center Tommy Jenkins, “a good, solid ball player," according to the eighth grade fcoach.
Forward Thomas Rector added 10 the scoring threat. “He’1 '■ great rebounder and a (. shooter,” said ConnUcy. “He drove well. Thomas can really move with the ball.”
Floor leader was point guard H. B. Wood. “He set us up on offense,” the coach noted.
Troy Jenkins was swing man, playing forward or guard position as needed. “He’s a smart ball player,” Connifey reported. "In practice, he was always quick
