Hunters checked a record number of deer in Rappahannock during the 198182 season, according to game warden Jim Bankston.

A total of 1,308 animals was legally checked at stations in the county with a breakdown of 912 bucks and 396 does. Last year. 806 animals were taken.

Rappahannock’s tally is not unique, Bankston noted, reporting that all but five counties west of the Blue Ridge Mountains posted record kills.

He attributed the high kill partially to the excellent weather that favored hunters this season.
