“It was a hard fought game,” Connifey recalled. “And it was our first away game. The guys were a little nervous.” The Panthers had a “very shakey” 14-13 edge at halftime but fell behind in the final quarter to lose, 27-23.
Stonewall Jackson was the Panthers’ opponent in the last game of the season. “I reminded the kids that we’d been down by six in the first game and that they needed to play heads up ball. They really responded. We were able to take an early lead and maintain it to win, 36-27.”
Connifey attributed a large part of the credit for the successful 1981-82 season, best ever for an RCHS eighth grade team, to his assistant, Gary Leake.
“He's a tremendous ball player,” Connifey said of the former Panther star. “He helped me become a better coach. 1 learned a lot from Gary. And he helped the kids with his demonstrations.”
The eighth grade coach is a little cautious about predictions for the future of his players, noting that they won most of their contests by around ten points. “That’s a close game.” he emphasized. "But I have every reason to expect that they’ll do really well. I expect them to be able to hang with anybody when they reach junior varsity and varsity level.”
