Clearing the bench with three and a half minutes left in the game, coach Bob Edmonston directed his Varsity Panthers to 1 77-60 shellacking of Page, avenging last week’s defeat by Rappahannock’s across-themountain rivals.
Fans at the home game, the first at RCHS since the beginning of the season, saw substitute Wayne Atkins come off the bench to score 15 points. He was part of a balanced scoring thrust that left four Panthers, including Mike Leake, Karl Frye and Robert Myers, in double figures.
Rappahannock jumped to an early lead and held the advantage, 15-12, at the close ^ of the first period.
“We could have done better. We gave up three layups that we shouldn’t have,” Edmondson noted. “But the big story was our bench. They scored 12 points in the second quarter,” he said, with Atkins contributing 6. Pops Aylor 4 and Eric Bear 2 to outstrip Page, 24-12, in the period and give Rappahannock a 39-24 lead at the half.
