After an initial balk, the Rappahannock supervisors dug down into county coffers Monday to find $5,000 they had previously agreed to provide as the local share of costs for the new police and emergency services dispatch center’s communications equipment.
Supervisor Hubert Gilkey requested that $5,000 be turned over to the Rappahannock Fire and Rescue Association, recalling that the supervisors had authorized an $8,000 allocation as the local share of an 80 percent - 20 percent hardship grant awarded by the Virginia Rescue Squad Assistance Fund for communications equipment. The funds were included in the 1981-82,, budget but weren’t spent that year and the $8,000 isn’t shown as a line item in the current budget, he noted. Therefore, a resolution approving the transfer of $5,000 to the Fire and Rescue Association is necessary, Gilkey explained.
“It was put in last year’s budget as a contingency only,” countered Supervisor J. R. Latham.
Gilkey replied by reading from the June 8, 1981, board minutes a motion he introduced and Latham seconded, unanimously approving the $8,000 appropriation.
“1 recall the situation,” added Supervisor Charles Estes. “We are obligated to meet that matching share.”
“Where are we going to get the money from?” Latham asked. “If you make a motion to put this money up, you should know where it’s coming from.”
