Job changes, including transfers and voluntary relocations that generally involve new jobs, are the principal reason why people buy and sell homes. This was the conclusion reached by a large Chicago real estate firm. Of the company’s 4,070 residential transactions in 1975 (involving 4,070 buyers and 4,070 sellers) 47 percent of sellers and 44.61 percent of buyers cited transfers and voluntary relocations as their reasons for moving. The total of those giving job changes as their reason was down slightly from 1974. That year 51.5 percent of sellers cited job changes, while 50.7 percent of buyers gave the same reason.
