Uphill Fight
Despite the cut -in the Department of Corrections budget, it may still be possible for Rappahannock to get financial assistance for upgrading local jail facilities. Guest has pledged to introduce a bill in this year's General Assembly to restorefunds for reimbursement of jail renovation expenses. But passage will be an uphill fight, he acknowledged. The measure will first have to make it out of the Appropriations Committee on which the representatives closest geographically to Rappahannock are A1 Smith of Winchester and Earl Dickenson of Louisa, Guest noted. (Both are Democrats as are approximately twothirds of the Delegates and Senators in the General Assembly, Virginia's Governor, Lieutenant Governor and Attorney General. Guest and Nathan Miller, the county’s representative in the State Senate, are Republicans.)
Prisoners Scattered
Since the jail crisis began last March with Fauquier County’s announcement that it would no longer accept Rappahannock prisoners. Sheriff W. A. Buntin has been forced to scour the area for cell space.
At present, the county has one prisoner in Warren County, one in Culpeper, one in Woodstock and two in Fauquier.
