More than 56 million tons of soil are lost from Virginia farmlands each year, estimates Manly S. Wilder, Soil Conservation Service (SCS) State Conservationist.
High erosion rates threaten long-term agricultural productivity in many areas of Virginia. According to Wilder, “We have unacceptable erosion rates on approximately two-thirds of Virginia’s cropland.”
